"Wang Jie, should I bring a down jacket? Is the voltage the same as in China? Should I bring original or copies of the medical reports?"
Last week, a patient departing from Shanghai to Bishkek sent several messages while packing her suitcase. This is a typical inquiry our overseas coordinators receive almost daily — packing seems simple, but missing one key item can affect the entire cycle progress.

1. Packing Category List: Six Types of Items to Pack Separately

For IVF in Kyrgyzstan, pack your luggage according to six functional categories. The table below lists the core items and precautions for each category. Check them off one by one before departure.

2. Five Most Easily Overlooked Details

Based on past coordination experience, the following items or preparations are most often overlooked but are frequently used:

• Travel adapter (European Type C) — Kyrgyzstan uses two-round-pin sockets, voltage 220V/50Hz same as China, but plugs are not compatible. Without an adapter, phones, laptops, and thermos heating pads cannot be used. It is recommended to bring 2-3 adapters and a power strip.
• Thermos + Portable electric kettle — Local restaurants mainly serve ice water or cold water. During treatment, you need warm water for drinking, taking medication, and mixing protein powder. Hotel rooms usually have an electric kettle, but a thermos allows you to have hot water anytime during outings for check-ups.
• Slippers (non-slip sole) — Mid-to-high-end hotels in Bishkek may provide slippers, but most apartment-style hotels or budget accommodations do not. In the later stages of ovulation stimulation, mobility is limited, making a pair of soft, non-slip slippers very practical.
• Eye mask and earplugs — Bishkek is 2 hours behind China (2 hours later), making it easy to feel sleepy during the day and wake up early at night. Combined with varying hotel curtain blackout levels, an eye mask and earplugs can significantly improve sleep quality.
• Chinese/English or Russian instructions for common medications — Customs may inspect medications, especially packaged prescription drugs. Print out the instructions for each medication in advance, or have your doctor issue a medication certificate, to avoid unnecessary trouble.

3. Four Most Common Pitfalls

3.1 Passport validity less than 6 months

Kyrgyzstan requires a passport validity of at least 6 months for entry. If your passport has less than 6 months validity before your planned return date, you may be denied entry even with a valid visa. Check your passport validity before departure and renew it immediately at the immigration office if it does not meet the requirement.

3.2 Medical reports not translated or notarized

Local hospitals require medical reports in Russian or English for registration. If reports are only in Chinese, the hospital may require you to redo the tests, wasting time and money. It is recommended to have reports translated and notarized by a professional translation agency before departure, while keeping the originals.

3.3 Carrying medications without a prescription or doctor's note

Ovulation stimulation medications are prescription drugs. Customs have the right to confiscate medications without a prescription or hospital certificate. A patient once had 2 boxes of Gonal-f temporarily detained by customs due to the lack of a Russian prescription, and it was only released after the coordinator submitted the documents. All prescription drugs must be accompanied by an English/Russian prescription and diagnosis certificate from the doctor, and kept in carry-on luggage.

3.4 Insufficient cash or only bringing RMB

Kyrgyzstan uses the Som (KGS). Some merchants accept USD, but RMB is almost non-circulating. Chinese banks cannot directly exchange Som. It is recommended to bring USD cash and exchange it locally. Exchange rates at the airport are poor; exchange points in the city (many in Bishkek) offer better rates. Credit cards are accepted in large shopping malls and hotels, but small shops and taxis generally only accept cash.

4. Complete Process and Timeline from Departure to Return

Packing is not an isolated step but is embedded in the entire IVF cycle. The following timeline can help you work backward to prepare items.

4.1 4-6 weeks before departure

• Complete all preliminary tests (AMH, sex hormone panel, semen analysis, infectious diseases, chromosomes, etc.), obtain reports, and have them translated and notarized.
• Apply for a passport (if validity is insufficient) and a Kyrgyzstan visa (e-visa generally takes 3-5 working days, sticker visa requires mailing).
• Confirm the cycle plan with the hospital, and obtain the prescription and doctor's note for ovulation stimulation medications.

4.2 2-3 weeks before departure

• Book flights (recommend choosing a rebookable fare), and book accommodation (near the hospital or in a well-connected area).
• Purchase travel adapters, thermos, slippers, and other daily necessities.
• Prepare a cold chain pack for medications (ice pack + cooler), and confirm airline regulations for carrying injectables.

4.3 1 week before departure

• Scan all documents, reports, and prescriptions for electronic backup, and print 2 sets of copies to store separately.
• Exchange USD (recommended 500-1000 USD), and activate your credit card for overseas use.
• Pack clothes according to the Bishkek weather forecast: bring sufficient warm layers for winter, and sun protection gear for summer.

4.4 Days 1-3 after arrival

• Register at the local hospital, submitting all medical reports and original documents.
• Complete any supplementary tests (if necessary), and meet the doctor to confirm the ovulation stimulation protocol.
• Exchange Som, buy a local SIM card, and familiarize yourself with the area around the hospital and accommodation.

4.5 Ovulation stimulation period (usually 10-14 days)

• Take medication on time daily; medications need refrigeration, carry an ice pack when going out.
• Return to the hospital regularly for follicle monitoring (blood test + ultrasound); the coordinator will notify you of the next appointment time in advance.
• Among daily necessities, the thermos, slippers, and eye mask are used most frequently.

4.6 Egg retrieval + transfer (approximately 5-7 days)

• Fasting is required on the day of egg retrieval; rest after the procedure, and prepare sanitary pads and flat briefs.
• After transfer, it is recommended to rest in bed for 1-2 days; prepare loose clothing and easily digestible food.
• Luteal support medications must be taken on time; bring enough for the duration when returning home.

4.7 Return home

• Confirm that remaining medications can be taken out of the country (some drugs require a hospital certificate).
• Keep all medical invoices and medical records summary for insurance reimbursement or future treatment reference back home.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

5.1 How much cash should I bring?

It is recommended to bring 500-1000 USD in cash (for daily expenses after exchange), along with a Visa or Mastercard credit card for hospital fees and large purchases. Hospitals usually accept cards, but some clinics may require cash payment for part of the fee; confirm with the hospital in advance.

5.2 What if I don't speak the language?

The official languages of Kyrgyzstan are Russian and Kyrgyz, and English is not widely spoken. It is recommended to install Yandex Translate or Google Translate on your phone and download the Russian offline pack. Most reproductive centers have Chinese coordinators or translation services; confirm with the hospital whether Chinese support is provided before departure.

5.3 What if I don't like the local food? Can I cook for myself?

Many apartment-style hotels in Bishkek have simple kitchens where you can cook noodles and heat food. It is recommended to bring some portable seasonings (e.g., small packets of salt, soy sauce, chili sauce) and convenience foods (e.g., instant oats, soup packets). Local supermarkets sell rice, eggs, vegetables, and meat, so cooking for yourself is entirely feasible.

5.4 Can I still do IVF in Kyrgyzstan with low AMH?

AMH levels reflect ovarian reserve but are not the only determining factor. People with low AMH can still try, but they may need a more aggressive stimulation protocol or multiple egg retrievals to accumulate embryos. There is no special difference in packing, but it is recommended to discuss the protocol with your doctor in advance and prepare a more sufficient supply of ovulation stimulation medications.

5.5 What special items does the male partner need to bring?

The male partner needs to bring an ID card, passport, and semen analysis report (within the last 3 months). Abstinence for 2-7 days is required before the sperm collection day, as per the hospital's instructions. Daily necessities are similar to the female partner's, but it is recommended to bring an extra pair of loose underwear and comfortable sweatpants for easy changing before and after sperm collection.

6. Observations from an Overseas Coordinator

In the process of assisting hundreds of families going to Kyrgyzstan for IVF, several phenomena are worth noting:

• Document issues are the most common cause of delays. Almost every month, we encounter cases of insufficient passport validity or marriage certificate notarization not meeting requirements. Check all documents at least one month before departure and have them reviewed by a professional agency once.
• Cold chain for medications is the biggest logistical challenge. Ovulation stimulation injectables require continuous refrigeration at 2-8°C. Ice packs may melt during checked baggage on flights. It is recommended to use a professional medical cooler and choose direct flights (to reduce transit time). If flying direct from Beijing or Urumqi to Bishkek, the flight time is only 4-5 hours, and ice packs are sufficient.
• Mental preparation is more important than item preparation. Many patients focus all their energy on packing but neglect psychological and emotional adjustment. Staying overseas for 3-4 weeks, away from family and work, can easily lead to anxiety and loneliness. Bringing a favorite book, downloading some relaxing videos or music can sometimes be more useful than bringing an extra piece of clothing.
• Local medical resources are better than imagined. The equipment level and doctor experience at reproductive centers in Bishkek are not inferior to those in China. Moreover, due to relatively relaxed policies, procedures like PGT, egg freezing, and third-party assistance, which are restricted in China, can be performed. There is no need to overly worry about medical conditions when packing.
